Michael Schindhelm | „THE CHINESE LIVES OF ULI SIGG“ IN CANADA

„The Chinese Lives of Uli Sigg“ in Canada

The Vancouver International Film Festival presents The Chinese Lives of Uli Sigg in October. Accompanying, Georgia Straight magazine published a review and a conversation with Michael Schindhelm.

Janet Smith emphasizes how Uli Sigg participated in „one of China’s first forays into capitalism with the West“. The observation of China during the 70’s links the movie to Schindhelm’s personal experience. The director lived in the DDR and is therefore able to „understand what it meant for [Sigg] in the ’70s to travel freely in the country.“

The concurrence of restrictions within society and openness to the West becomes obvious in the biography of the artist Ai Weiwei. Previously Michal Schindhelm and Christoph Staub documented his consultancy for Herzog & De Meuron’s „Bird’s Nest“.
