The Challenge

Novel

In the final weeks of an election campaign in a newly re-established state in former East Germany, the situation turns dramatic for Western-born top politician Hannes Müller. Out with his adopted son, he is forced into a confrontation with a group of teens. After an anti-Semitic provocation, Müller, in the heat of the moment, slaps the group’s leader across the face. He is recognized, and a smear campaign conducted by the media and the public follows. Even Müller’s marriage begins to change beyond of his control. Christine, who lived many years in Cairo, had followed him into the East German provinces with her half-Arab son. And now he feels his wife, who has fascinated him and whom he loves, breaking away from him.
