Eulogy:
Michael Schindhelm (1960) is a German and Swiss writer, theater director and filmmaker. He received his education in East Germany and in Voronezh (RUS). He graduated as a quantum chemist. He then worked as a research assistant at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry at the Academy of Sciences in East Berlin until 1986. There he shared the office in the Department of Theoretical Chemistry with Angela Merkel, who later became German Chancellor. Schindhelm then launched his literary career with the autobiographical novel Robert’s Journey, in which a character named Renate, modeled on Merkel, appears. As a German-speaking connoisseur and expert of the Russian and English languages, he also worked as a translator, librettist and dramaturge. (…)
This brief overview of Michael Schindhelm’s development shows just how diverse his professional life is. It is therefore not surprising that his knowledge, skills and experience have enabled him to excel in the field of moving images. This brings us to the reason for awarding the SVIK Golden Pen to the author of the year 2023.
The art of film is primarily based on words and images. Movement, color and dramaturgical intensity as well as the plot with the course of the conversation are then the attention-grabbing elements of a film. The SVIK award is based on the film about the “M+ Museum” in Hong Kong: it shows how people behave, move and strive for goals alone and together in organizations. The work sheds a special light on one of the core tasks of the Swiss Association for Internal and Integrated Communication, namely the question of how trust grows in groups of people, which relationships and behaviors are lived out, how stability is created in uncertain times, what hopes the protagonists carry within them and what motivates them to commit themselves in a goal-oriented and concentrated manner in the first place. It is therefore about people’s performance, without which no great achievement and no great work can be created.
For the viewer, the film is primarily about the well-known Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron as well as the construction engineers and builders who designed, planned and built the “M+”. On the second level – and no less revealing – we hear many interesting facts from the spiritual and financial sponsors of the project as well as the exhibition organizers and visitors. On a further level, Schindhelm also makes the Asian and Chinese view of culture visible and tangible. At the same time, the political dimension of the project in a prominent location in Hong Kong becomes recognizable on a well-considered and diplomatic level.
With this film, author and filmmaker Michael Schindhelm shows how important it is to replace global competition among art museums with positioning in order to achieve stability and longevity. Before the eyes of attentive viewers, Michael Schindhelm turns a film into a work of art!
The film is recommended to all those who recognize and observe internal and integrated communication in all its diversity. You will not only be confronted with the qualities of information and communication, but also with the relationships between people in everyday life in Hong Kong.
The SVIK and the Erwin Blaser Foundation are delighted to award filmmaker Michael Schindhelm, who has deep ties to Switzerland, with the “M+ Museum and Art in Hong Kong” TV film in the field of organizational information and communication, the “Golden Pen of the SVIK for the Author 2023”.ichael Schindhelm (1960) is a German and Swiss writer, theater director and filmmaker.
