WHAT IT WAS AND WILL BE. Voices in the Cultural Forum Berlin

The Kulturforum Berlin will again present Michael Schindhelm’s sound installation “Wie es war wird” (What is was and will be) almost a year after its premiere on September 4, 2022. On one of Berlin’s most important public squares and cultural venues, a collage of voices and sounds will be heard that on the one hand evoke the eventful history of the legendary district at the Kulturforum, and on the other articulate longings and concerns with regard to the ambitious development of the Kulturforum into a place of contemporary arts.

Voices: Corinna Kirchhoff and Michael Hanemann,
Claudio Bucher (Collaboration)
Cornelius Rapp (sound engineering/audio production),
Johann Otten (content collaboration/sound design),
LORACS GmbH (LRAD technology)

Utopias are the blueprints for imaginary spaces in time; the mythical golden age or a bright future. This project explores these concepts within a real-life framework. Historical voices will recall the rise of the city and Tiergarten district, its brief heyday and eventual (self-)destruction. “What It Was and Will Be” mixes the prominent voices of yesteryear with the hopes and dreams of today’s people on Berlin’s streets and squares. Surrounded by cultural institutions, the Kulturforum brings a utopian space to life.
