Walter Spies, a free-spirited, highly talented painter and musician with a zest for life. In 1923 he was hired as a sailor and travelled to Bali, via Java, where he settled in 1927. Over the years, he immersed in the culture and created extraordinary paintings. His works captured the imagination of Balinese artists and Western celebrities alike. Charlie Chaplin and Vicky Baum both visited him at his peak, on his island paradise. For the first time, the fascinating life of this high society drop-out is presented in a German biography.
